I'm on a quest along with the 9 other people in my choir. As you know (or may not know), I sing with a Bulgarian Choir, Yasna Voices, which is made up of 9 women of varying backgrounds and nationalities. We met on Craigslist (www.craigslist.org) 2 years ago and since then have become very seriously dedicated to the Bulgarian Vocal Tradition. We are all Brooklyn-based and only one of us (our leader, Vlada) is actually Bulgarian. What brings us together is our shared love for the hauntingly rich close harmonies found in Bulgarian music! Anyway, we are currently fundraising for our first educational and performance trip to Bulgaria.

I would like to ask you kindly to CONTRIBUTE to our travel fund to Bulgaria through our nonprofit sponsor. This trip will deepen tremendously our knowledge of traditional Bulgarian music and culture through an intensive week of studies with Kremena Stancheva, a life-long soloist for the famous Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares. This trip will also enable us to participate in the International Folk Festival in Varna, Bulgaria, August 7-12, 2005 where we will be able to exchange knowledge with ensembles from all over the world! 11 groups from 4 continents (coming from Brazil, Venezuela, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, USA, Togo, Turkey, Ukraine, France, and Holland) were selected for the festival, and Yasna Voices was chosen from over 50 candidates. For this incredible opportunity for cultural exchange, we have enhanced our repertoire to include several American traditional songs, in our own arrangements, revealing some of the shared commonalities between traditional music worldwide. Over the past several months, we have raised funds through small grants, CD sales, and regular performances. Unfortunately we did not end up getting the largest grant that we'd applied for, and for this reason, we are still short $5000 dollars. We had made the decision to call it quits if we'd not raised sufficient funds by mid-June, but the majority of us still think we can make this happen! So join Yasna Voices and our friends from Romashka, Non-aligned Movement, Valerie Green (belly dancer), and Mehanata's own DJ Joro Boro for an evening of Gypsy-Bulgarian-middle eastern raucous dancing and eating at everyone's favorite Bulgarian bar, Mehanata. The party will go on until WE call it quits.

Wed., June 29, 8pm (be there sharp to ensure you see our performance. We go on 8:15 sharp)

Bulgarian Bar (Mehanata) 416 Broadway @ Canal $15 at the door

We hope to see you there!
