This year's juror Roy Flukinger, selected 69 photographers & 80 images for Visual Proof. Over 400 photographers entered the competition resulting in 2500 slides from which to choose. Past jurors include Keith Carter, Chien-Chi Chang, Linda Connor, Michael Kenna, Duane Michals, Jock Sturges, Joyce Tenneson & Anne Wilkes Tucker. Roy Flukinger will present a lecture entitled "Out of Texas: Photography's History as Reflected in the Collections of the Harry Ransom Center of The University of Texas", on Friday, July 16 at the Seattle Art Museum at 6:30 pm. The opening reception for Visual Proof will follow the lecture at the Photographic Center Northwest gallery from 8:00 to 9:30 pm. Roy Flukinger will announce awards ($1000, $500, $250) to the top three photographers deemed Best of Show. Roy L. Flukinger is the Senior Curator of Photography and Film of the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is in charge of the development, administration and application of the collections. He has published and lectured extensively in the fields of regional, cultural and contemporary photography and the history of art and photography, and has produced or participated in nearly fifty exhibitions. His service on professional boards has included the Texas Photographic Society, the Texas Humanities Resource Center, the Houston Fotofest, PhotoAmericas, the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus, the Houston Center of Photography, and the Steering Committee for the Texas Historical Foundation's Historical Photographs Project. He is currently at work on projects ranging from an exhibition on Russell Lee and a retrospective of the photo-historian Helmut Gernsheim to contemporary and historical overviews of Texas photography, as well as finding and developing acquisitions for the Photography Collection of the Ransom Center.
