Two years in the making, on May 23rd and 24th, 2011, Sarah Small and collaborators brought to life 120 models and musicians, at the former Williamsburg Savings Bank, now known as Skylight One Hanson. Chosen as one of Time Out New York's Top Critic's Picks, and listed in the New York Times, Flavorpill and more, the 120 model Tableau had the attention of many, long before the cast took the stage.
Maintaining it's roots in her still photography series, The Delirium Constructions, and already the most ambitious project of her career, in 2011, for the first time, Small explored, within the Tableau Vivant, a specific social phenomenon: the ritual of marriage. With its airs of pageantry and religious rectitude, wedding ceremonies celebrate the most intimate joining of two individuals in the most public sphere, providing rich fodder for examination within the project’s framework. On the evenings of May 23rd and 24th, Small acted as the legal officiant for three couples (two weddings and a vow renewal ceremony), as she simultaneously directed the attendant Tableau Vivant cast in their own explorations of the theme, mingling performance art with reality in a compelling cocktail.
Small and collaborators received a stellar review from The New York Times and were featured on both the front and back covers of the Sunday Art section of the Washington Post. Among many others, the event had press in attendance from both local and international media, including Italy's Virgin TV.

After a successful event at powerHouse Arena during the 2010 Dumbo Arts Festival, Sarah Small and collaborators once again directed 36 models and musicians, for a small, private audience in the East Village of NYC. An evening of live performance, wine and cocktails, and delectable hors d’oeuvres, models followed live direction, as vocalists and strings players emerged from within the living picture.
An intimate re-creation of the piece created this past September, the performance yet again featured an original a Cappella score by Sarah Small and Rima Fand, and stage direction by Adam J. Thompson.
Alongside these live performances, there is currently a hybrid documentary–fantasy feature film in the works, exploring the evolution of these Tableaux. Prior to the live event on the 24th, the cast and crew of this particular performance dedicated a day to filming a series of interviews, staged interactions, and dreamscapes. Rather than focusing on the elements of live performance that are addressed during a typical rehearsal, for the first time the bulk of the studio time had been set aside to prepare dream-like sequences to later be interwoven into the performance footage.

This performance took place at powerHouse Arena during the Dumbo Arts Festival. Again, 36 models were directed into implausible interaction. Models followed live direction, as vocalists and violins emerged from within the living picture. The performance featured an original a Cappella score by Sarah Small and Rima Fand, and stage direction by Adam J. Thompson.
Directly following the performance, a panel of choreographers, curators, and art historians (Jill Sigman, Mashinka Firunts, Danny Snelson, and Natalie Galazka) led a discussion about the contemporary intersection of performance and photography. The panel was moderated by Elizabeth Barragan and was curated by Lindsay Comstock.

Overlooking the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, at the private residence of Megan Browne and Stephan Marquardt, the Tableau team collaborated once more on May 8 to create an evening of implausible interaction.
Fourteen models, two tango dancers, a violinist, a saxophonist, and an accordion player became activated in a series of emotive interaction amongst a crowd of spectators.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, closing the day, a series of living, breathing images unfolded against a backdrop of water, bridges and city lights.
The senses were further indulged by delectable finger-foods, berries, chocolates, wine and edible flowers.
In an experiment to take the Tableau to a new level of viewership, the performance was streamed live.
Special thanks to Cliff Hausner for lighting the event and our amazing performers: Natalya Read, Ree Jakin, Mary Tireny, Becca Gabel, Hue Bell, John Veranes, Julianna Zarzycki, Daria Skripka, Sidney Etienne, Kristen Pyles, Ellen Ann Dobrovir, Sha-Lynne Reiser, Frank Angelina, Josephine Decker, George Bajuscik, Cassandra Boheme, Sarah Alden, Patrick Farell, Aurora Nealand, and Willa Roberts.
This mini-performance attempts to study the Tableau sans nudity and interweaves elements of choreographed dance within the performance. 19 models are joined by the haunting Black Sea Hotel (#2 on iTunes World Music) and Shara Worden (of My Brightest Diamond, The Decemberists and Sufjan Stevens). The performance features nine-year old dancer, Izzy Spagnuolo, weaving in and out through the 19 static models who are outfitted by Stylist, Faith Cummings. Dance-wear is donated by UBCostumes and Dancewear.
The event includes an exhibition of Sarah Small’s still photographic series, The Delirium Constructions – from which the Tableau is based – on view in the gallery. The night of art and performance is curated by Worden and celebrates Women’s History Month.

Held in a loft space overlooking Manhattan, twelve models are brought together in various stages of undress and directed into an intricate composition of subtle shifts in eye movement and posture. Willa, from Black Sea Hotel, sings the traditional Turkish song, Efem, and Sarah joins in a duet at the end, singing the Bulgarian song, Karemfilcheto, as the models exit the stage. The salon also includes an exhibition of Small's still images from The Delirium Constructions series.

After nearly one year since the first performance, Small and collaborators came together to stage a small, intimate Tableau Vivant for the audience of Babeland's Moregasm book launch. Models Sidney Etienne, Kristin Pyles, Lainie Dalby, Jules Gimbrone, and Janice Marie Foote teased the crowd with enticing, playful interaction. The boisterous celebration of Sarah's photography in Moregasm provided a perfect platform for a study of the Tableau.
In the very first installation of the project, dozens of brave men and women, the naked and the clothed, collaborated in two evenings dedicated to Small's Tableau Vivant based on her ongoing photographic series, The Delirium Constructions.
On February 10, 2009, Small assembled her sublime cast of naked ballerinas and nude, distinguished elders, twins and body builders, housewives and animal trainers, bruised beauties, libidinous artists, gun-nuts and radiant, luminous women, at the Jewel Street Studios in Brooklyn for a marathon photo session. With disarming directorial persuasion, she arranged her subjects, staging moments of uncanny interaction and fixing them in her uniquely suspenseful visual style. The fruit of this photo shoot formed the blueprint for the live “re-take,” one month later.
On March 14th, Small re-convened her same cast of subjects again at Jewel Street Studios in Brooklyn for a decadent party (sponsored by Chopin Vodka), as the public joined in to reconstruct the first shoot in a sprawling, living photograph. Models were arranged on risen platforms, in various states of undress and in interactive narratives as a centerpiece for the party. Guests wined and dined within the unsettling confines of her creation. The Tableau echoed and transformed what had happened a month prior, while also spinning new tales, distorted by the social element.
